Converting JPG to PNG is useful when you need lossless storage to prevent further quality degradation from re-editing and re-saving. Every time you edit and save a JPG, lossy compression is applied again, compounding artifacts. Converting to PNG stops this degradation cycle. JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group, introduced in 1992) uses DCT-based lossy (baseline, progressive, or lossless) compression. PNG (Portable Network Graphics, introduced in 1996) uses DEFLATE (lossless) compression. PNG adds transparency support that JPG lacks, which is valuable for logos, icons, and overlay graphics. The conversion is lossless in the sense that no additional quality is lost — the PNG output contains exactly the same pixel data as the JPG input. However, the PNG file will be much larger (typically 5-10x) because lossless PNG compression is far less efficient than lossy JPG compression for photographic content.
Typical JPG file size: A 12MP photo at quality 80: ~3-5 MB. Typical PNG file size: A 12MP photo: ~15-25 MB; a 800x600 screenshot: ~200-500 KB. The PNG output will be larger than the JPG input because lossless compression cannot match the compression ratios of lossy formats.
If you need a smaller lossless file, consider converting to WebP lossless instead of PNG — it produces files roughly 26% smaller. If you are converting to PNG just for transparency, remember that the transparent areas will need to be created separately (e.g., with background removal) since JPG has no transparency data to preserve.
