The key tradeoff is transparency: JPG does not support it, so any transparent areas become solid white (or your chosen background color). For photographs and images with smooth color gradients, JPG at quality 85 is visually indistinguishable from the PNG original. For images with sharp text or fine lines, compression artifacts may be visible at lower quality settings.
Expect dramatic file size reductions: a 12MP PNG photo (~15-25 MB) converts to ~2-4 MB as JPG at quality 85. A 1920x1080 screenshot (~1-3 MB PNG) becomes ~200-500 KB as JPG. The exact ratio depends on image complexity — photos compress more efficiently than screenshots with text.
Quality 85 is the sweet spot for photographs — files are 80-90% smaller than PNG with imperceptible quality loss. Below 70, compression artifacts become visible on gradients and edges.
