Converting from PPT (Microsoft PowerPoint Binary Presentation) to PPTX (Office Open XML Presentation) helps you work with your content in a different application or workflow. PPT and PPTX serve different purposes, and converting between them bridges the gap.
PPT (Microsoft PowerPoint Binary Presentation, introduced in 1987) uses None (OLE2 compound binary) compression. PPTX (Office Open XML Presentation, introduced in 2007) uses ZIP (containing XML slides, media, and relationships) compression. PPT browser support: None (requires office application). PPTX browser support: None (requires office application or online viewer).
The quality impact depends on the specific settings used during conversion. PPTX uses compression that may affect quality depending on the chosen settings.
Typical PPT file size: A 30-slide deck with images: ~10-40 MB. Typical PPTX file size: A 30-slide deck with images: ~5-30 MB. Expect a dramatic file size reduction — often 5-20x smaller — when converting from uncompressed PPT to PPTX.
For the best conversion results, always start from the highest quality source file available. Converting from a previously compressed file compounds any existing compression artifacts. When in doubt, use higher quality settings — you can always re-convert at lower quality later, but you cannot recover quality that has been lost.
