TIFF files preserve every pixel with lossless compression, but this comes at the cost of larger file sizes. Converting to JPG applies lossy DCT-based compression that can dramatically reduce file size while maintaining visual quality that is indistinguishable from the original for most viewers.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format, introduced in 1986) uses LZW, ZIP, JPEG, PackBits, CCITT, or None compression. JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group, introduced in 1992) uses DCT-based lossy (baseline, progressive, or lossless) compression. TIFF supports transparency, but JPG does not. Converting from TIFF (lossless) to JPG (lossy) will reduce file size significantly, but some quality is permanently discarded during compression. At higher quality settings (80-90%), the visual or audible difference is typically imperceptible. At lower settings, compression artifacts may become noticeable.
